He suffered a personal loss before the 2005 Junior Hockey World Cup in Rotterdam, Netherlands, when his father passed away. Khandekar was training with the Indian team in Frankfurt, Germany, at the time. He rushed back to India to attend his father's funeral, and three days later was back in Rotterdam to play for India.
