Before her hockey career took off, she contemplated switching from the sport to athletics in order to fulfil her ambition of competing at an Olympic Games. She enjoyed competing in hurdles, and considered competing in heptathlon. Her talent was recognised by her club's hockey coach however, and she received a trial for Great Britain which convinced her to stay with hockey. "If I hadn't got in that year, I might not have carried on. It was real borderline stuff and that's why I thought about going into athletics." (manchestereveningnews.co.uk, 07 Jun 2012)
