Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, he grew up in Perth, WA, Australia, before eventually moving to Canada. While he was growing up in Australia, his Canadian father took him and his brother to Calgary to play in the U19 National Championships. They were both scouted, but his father kept that a secret until he was 17 when he told him there was an opportunity to play for Canada. “My dad always wanted me to pursue the Canadian route." After the Canadian federation told him they were interested in including him in the national squad in 2009, he moved to British Columbia.
