Following the Commonwealth Boxing Championships in Liverpool, England in 2007, he decided not to return to India with the team and chose to remain in England to pursue his dream of becoming a professional, although this meant expiring his visa. He trained with Pakistani British boxer Amir Khan who convinced him to go back to India and apply for a work permit for the United Kingdom, costing him a possible spot on the 2008 Beijing Olympics team. Upon returning to India in January 2008, he was widely criticised for his decision and was rejected a visa on the grounds that he hadn't returned with the Indian team in 2007. He decided to start from the bottom in amateur boxing again, under Railways coach Jaidev Bisht and made his return to national competition at the Sahara Senior Men's National Boxing Championship in July 2010.
