BATTLE WITH LEUKAEMIA
After a routine blood test in 1999 he was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia and was given five years to live unless a bone marrow donor was found. However, the national and international search for a suitable donor took many months and he eventually decided he had waited long enough and in June 2000 started on a drug called Interferon Alpha, which resulted in a year of multiple daily injections leaving his body "sore...like a pincushion." He began to lose his hair and a lot of weight, as well as other unpleasant side effects, leaving him so weak that he could not even lift his gun. Then, he heard about a trial for a new drug called Glivec, and after a course of several months the drug made him feel better with "very few side-effects". The search for a bone marrow donor continued, and while he was not in remission he said "I'm still alive and I'm getting better every day". In January 2009, he marked his 10-year battle against leukaemia by helping to host a fund-raising event in Perthshire, saying "I would say I'm very very well. I never tempt fate but I lead a perfectly normal life." (dailymail.co.uk, 01 Dec 2001; news.bbc.co.uk, 30 Jan 2009)
