Why this sport? He wanted to compete in steeplechase to emulate Moses Kiptanui and William Mutwol, who also came from Marakwet, Kenya. In 2001 he entered and won an Athletics Kenya steeplechase in Kakamega. His performance attracted the attention of coach Paul Ereng, who invited him to train at the High Altitude Training Centre in Eldoret, Kenya.
