In 2008 the Malaysian national doubles coach Rexy Mainaky raised the issue with Koo that his reputation for partying was affecting his performances on court. This came after he and partner Tan Boon Heong were knocked out in the first round of the 2008 All England tournament, thus failing to defend their 2007 title. Mainaky said he had spoken to Koo several times, voicing concern over 'rumours' that he was distracted by women and excessive partying. (Reuters, The Straights Times, 18 Mar 2008)
