He suffered a back injury while on tour in Canada in October 2009. (indiatimes.com, 05 Feb 2010)
In August 2006 he was selected for India's World Cup team, but was unable to compete after being accidentally shot in the hip by a train guard cleaning his gun. "I was sitting and talking to Rajpal [another hockey player] when I heard this loud bang behind me and felt something searing hot enter me from behind. It was excruciatingly painful, like fire," he said. "Then I felt hands all over me, people lifting me, chaos, commotion even as I could not think straight." The stray bullet punctured his pancreas and chipped off a small portion of spine. Doctors attending his recovery said he was extremely lucky the bullet did not touch his nerves, otherwise he could have faced permanent paralysis in his lower limbs. DRAG-FLICK SPECIALIST He scored 16 goals in India's London Olympic qualifying tournament, 15 through drag-flicks. Although he was top scorer and player of the final against France, he insisted he is not a one-man show. "I owe my success to all my teammates. It is the result of the team work. Had there been no moves, there would not have been any penalty corners. Then, how would I have scored the goals." (thehindu.com, 28 Feb 2012)
BRIEF BAN AND APOLOGY In August 2011 he and midfielder Sardar Singh left a training camp to attend a function without informing team management. It was one of several disciplinary complaints levelled at both players, and Hockey India reacted by hitting both players with a two-year ban that was later revoked after both Sandeep and Sardar apologised. OCCUPATION He is Deputy Superintendent of Police in Haryana. (ibnlive.in.com, 26 Feb 2012)
