He became the first Indian male to compete in a discus final at the world championships, when he placed seventh at the 2011 edition in Daegu, Republic of Korea. He is also the first Indian male to win a medal in discus at the Commonwealth Games, following his silver medal at the 2010 Games in Delhi, India, and the first Indian male to win a gold medal in discus at the Commonwealth Games, following his victory at the 2014 Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
