At age 22 he found out about his indigenous heritage after his father researched his relatives. He is a descendant of the Wotjobaluk/Wergia people of Wimmera, VIC, Australia. In 2008 he became the first indigenous athlete to represent Australia in a field event at the Olympic Games when he competed in discus throw in Beijing, and in 2010 he became the first indigenous athlete to win a medal for Australia in a field event at a major championships when he won gold in discus throw at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.
