He was originally selected to compete for Iran at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, but had a serious dispute with his coach meant he did not compete. This and the politics involved in Iranian wrestling were contributing factors to Hassan's decision to emigrate from Iran to Australia. (wrestling.ca, 04 July 2005)
