FUTURE PLANS She plans to take a break from competing after the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. She also wants to mentor young athletes in Papua New Guinea when she retires. "I think it has been almost 18 years of consistency [speaking in 2020], so I need a bit of break and I will see after the 2020 Olympic Games whether I might be coming back, but not as consistently as I used to. I'd rather look for something else [other than coaching], which is mentoring athletes, and I'm doing it now. There are eight million people [in Papua New Guinea] and only few are going to be running and doing sports, but not everybody is going to be the same. That's something I'll be doing, but not coaching." (EMTV Online YouTube channel, 12 Dec 2020)
COMMONWEALTH GAMES SANCTION She was omitted from the Papua New Guinea team for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, QLD, Australia, by Athletics PNG for not taking part in the 200m medal ceremony during the 2017 Pacific Mini Games in Port Vila, Vanuatu, after she had won silver. (abc.net.au, 10 Mar 2018; thenational.com.pg, 02 Mar 2018)
LEARNING TO READ While training for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she also learned to read after leaving school at an early age to look after her parents. "I left school when I was very young – about 10 years old. My parents were sick, so they couldn't help me to pay my school fees and I pretty much looked after my family back home." Sporting philosophy / motto |
"Coming from nothing, coming from a small country, there are so many challenges we face. It has never put me down, I know that you can't bring all that negativity into your life, so when challenges come it just makes me stronger, to push more and try to do something better. Trying to achieve more." (tokyo2020.org, 07 May 2020) |
