| Other information | OLYMPIAN She represented India at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She competed in the Women's 10000m, finishing in 25th place in the final with a time of 32:35.66. (sports.espn.go.com, 18 Feb 2010) MARATHON WIN Shreedharan comes from a poor family in the village of Mullakkanam in Kerala. Her athletic form and Olympian status has helped her family. In 2008 she won the One Million Indian Rupees prize purse in Chennai Half-Marathon. "My dad died when I was very young and it was a big struggle for all of us. My elder brother Pradeep had to stop his studies after the eighth standard and go to work." (The Hindu, 08 Sep 2008) TRIPLE THREAT At the 2007 Asian Games, Shreedharan had a masterful performances winning three gold medals. Her first two medal performances were the most incredible, she competed in both the Mile and the 10,000m within a span of two and half hours on the opening day of the athletic competitions. She eventually won both with modest 4:38.38 and 36:09.30 timings respectively. Her third medal after winning the 5000m on the final day. It marked an incredible turnaround of form for her as she finished fifth in both the 5000m and 10000m at previous Asian Games. Her performances at these Games and those that followed led to her selection into the Indian squad sent to the Beijing Olympics the following year. |
