Kumar comes from the famed boxing town of Bhiwani in the state of Haryana. "The chief national boxing coach G.S. Sandhu called Bhiwani the 'Cuba of India', a title the town has earned in the last decade by doggedly nurturing a deep-seated passion for boxing among its rural youth." Why this sport? He visited his brother at the SAI hostel, India's famous boxing school, in Bhiwani. "Every day, I took him food and milk from home," said Kumar. "Soon I became interested in boxing myself. I was told boxing would ensure a good career and a regular income."
