In 2009, he missed out on selection for the Australian team travelling to Singapore for a World Cup meet after only just recovering from a shoulder injury. He asked head coach Alan Thompson if he could compete if he paid his own way. Upon Thompson saying yes, he and his supporters set up a Facebook page and starting creating fan t-shirts. Within six weeks, $7000 was collected in donations and he was able to make his internationald debut in Singapore and set Commonwealth and Australian records in his butterfly events.
