IDOL DEFEATED Growing up, she idolised fellow breaststroke swimmer Leisel Jones, who won a gold medal at the 2000 Olympic Games. Ten years later, she beat her hero at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India. "When I was in fourth grade I wrote her a fan letter when she was in the Olympics. I remember saying, 'I want to be just like you one day and my name [Leiston Jane] is almost like yours'. Now I think back and I am quite embarrassed about it. It's been great to get to know her better, to find out that she is human and not some freak out there." (theaustralian.com.au, 06 Oct 2010) |
Injuries |
She had hip surgery following the 2012 Olympic Games in London and returned to competition in January 2013. However, her hip continued to cause her problems and she was unable to be selected for the 2013 World Swimming Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
