RISE TO STARDOM She shot to prominence when she qualified for the Delhi Commonwealth Games only five weeks after beginning resuming competitive athletics after a two-year exile. In her first race over hurdles in three years she stormed to victory in the Australia Capital Territory [ACT] championships before winning the 100m hurdles event at the Australian National Championships. "I mean, competitive athletics wasn't an option. Hadn't given it a thought. So as for someone suggesting I'd be representing my country..." (Daily Telegraph, 24 Apr 2010, Daily Telegraph, 24 Mar 2010)
CONTROVERSY Her B-qualifying standard time of 13.46s she ran at the ACT titles was wiped because she had forgotton to have her named marked off at the check-in zone as part of the marshalling protocol. Despite appealing the decision Australia Athletics refused to overturn the sanction. She later ran under the qualifying standard again without drama. (Daily Telegraph, 24 Mar 2010)
SELF-FUNDED She funded her route to Commonwealth Games qualification herself. "Because trying to fund my dream was hard. Well, it is hard. But what other choice do I have. You've gotta give it a go." (Daily Telegraph, 23 Apr 2010) |
