He announced his retirement from competitive swimming in July 2018, stating that his appearances at the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016 had been the highlight of his career. "For me the moment that will stay with me forever will be when I came out at London. The atmosphere and noise was just exhilarating. He has finished in fourth place in the 200m breaststroke at five separate major tournaments - the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russian Federation, the 2014 European Championships in Berlin, Germany, and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
