He came close to quitting the sport in 2016 after his employer, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation of India [ONGC], decided to not renew his contract. He found it difficult to cover his training costs as his father was the only member of his family that was earning a salary. However, he then met coach Amrish Kumar, who motivated him to persevere. "I was on stipend for three years and then they told me I wasn't going to be made permanent. I was almost ready to quit the sport. I was 27 and still taking support from my parents."
